The game of poker has a history of many variations. Some of these games are believed to have originated in pre-Columbian cultures. The name poker is derived from a game played by two to four people using 20 cards, and only aces are dealt. This game was then brought to North America by French settlers. Regardless of where it originated, the game’s roots are in the centuries before the game of poker became popular.

In the first two rounds of the game, all but one player may raise and fold their hand. The remaining player collects the pot without revealing their hand. If more than one player remains in contention, the final round of betting is called a showdown. The winner is the player with the highest hand at the showdown. When the last betting round has been completed, the cards are revealed to determine the winner. The player with the highest hand wins the pot.
